“The sheep hear [the shepherd’s] voice, and he calls his own sheep by name and leads them out…I am the Good Shepherd.”
The Good Shepherd: one of the earliest icons of Christ and one of the most enduring. The history of this image reveals so much about the yearning of the human heart: we just want to be found—called—by someone who knows our name. We yearn to lay down in green pastures. We yearn to be led by still waters. And because we yearn, we make art — we take the risk of hope that our yearning may yet be fulfilled.
“The thief comes to steal, kill, and destroy; but I come so you may life—life most abundant.”
