This piece is inspired by the legend surrounding the martyrdom of St. Paul. As a Roman citizen, he was beheaded under Nero’s persecution, and as the legend has it, the three spots where his decaptitated head bounced, a spring of water sprang forth. The Church commemorates the site of his martyrdom with a Trappist monastery that commemorates the Three Fountains, also known as the Sage waters. Indeed, Tertullian was right: the blood of the martyrs is the seed of the church.
